Achievement 🏆 Day 10 - Networking Advent Calendar
The Networking Advent Calendar is a 24-day long training program to build your networking muscles (and your network)! Not sure why you should do this? Missed Day 1? Read more here.
Day 10: Share one achievement in 2021
Yesterday we talked about how a great networker creates presence, and a simple way to do that is by commenting on posts by people you’d like to network with.
Let’s take that to a next step today — share one achievement you’re proud of in the year 2021. It doesn’t have to be something grandiose or groundbreaking, as long as it’s an achievement that was most important to you. This can helps us with two things.
Show them what you can do
Create visibility by sharing your achievement. It doesn’t matter how many people are reading, you might only need 1-2 people who see the value in your work and can open the right doors for you.
Example: I updated my Twitter bio to include my newsletter link. It doesn’t have a large following but it caught the eye of a leader in a company I admire. The company then reached out to me for a chat, and it turned out they wanted to offer me a writing opportunity. It felt like a dream!
Practice talking about yourself
A networker needs to introduce and talk about themselves all the time. This is also a crucial part of the job search process. Yet every week I interview candidates who seemed very uncomfortable speaking about their own work.
This is the perfect chance to practice bragging about your experiences! I encourage you to write about your achievement as creatively as you’d like. You can:
Make it into a case study
Be open about your mistakes and failures
Make a Calvin & Hobbes pitch deck about it like Deepti did here, and she’s now a 2nd-time startup founder
Make a video about it
Use “before” and “after” images to share your growth
Turn it into a story and tell it as the narrator
Are these networking exercises helpful? Any feedback for me? Looking forward to hearing from you!
